Continental Fresh Gears Up for Water For All Hike; Albert Perez and Patrick Kelly Share
MIAMI, FL - Wondering what the views are like from the highest point in the Caribbean? Back in March, we brought you news of a chance to witness this view for yourself, as Continental Fresh is once again embarking on a journey to Pico Duarte for the highly anticipated and incredibly impactful Water For All hike. Taking place on November 17–22 this year, roughly 40 people will head to the Dominican Republic for the hike and to take part in an inspirational initiative in collaboration with BLUE Missions.
“Last year we took about 19 people from across the industry on this hike, and this year we’re expecting to take around 40,” says Chief Executive Officer Albert Perez, who has been dedicated to building and promoting these water projects for over 40 years now. “From international growers to local importers, we have people from all across the produce industry—as well as outside of our industry—eager to participate.”
Each attendee must raise a minimum of $750,000 to participate in the hike, which goes toward BLUE Missions’ efforts to implement essential water projects in neighborhoods across the Dominican Republic.
The trek includes three days of hiking to the top of Pico Duarte, followed by a fourth day of visiting one of the communities where one of BLUE Missions’ projects has already been built. This allows the hikers to see first-hand how the community’s life has been impacted through the efforts of Water For All.
To further back this cause, Continental Fresh donates one penny per box on each sale of its Water For All-labeled produce back to BLUE Missions, allowing the organization to increase its support for communities in need.
“The Pico trip for me was a game changer,” shared Patrick Kelly, Founder and Host of The Produce Industry Podcast. “I’ve been a hiker and backpacker on the West Coast of the United States, but never have I encountered a trek like this. Truly experiencing what people go through to get a glass of water vs. getting it directly from the fridge! This plays a huge role in how I view certain aspects of my life. If you are interested in giving your mind a reset, recharge, as well as hanging out with some great people, this is the trek for you!”
Increasing the impact of this annual trek, The Produce Industry Podcast raffled off a free trip on the Water For All hike, which was awarded to FreshEdge’s Ross Nelson, affectionately known as Ross the Produce Boss.
“This hike is an opportunity for us, as an industry, to give back. What we aim to create through this participation is to show an example of what Continental Fresh is doing, and to inspire other industry leaders to come up with other ways they can make a difference in the areas they are passionate about,” Albert shares.
There is still time to sign up for this life-changing adventure, so be sure to join Continental Fresh on this annual initiative. For more information, click here.
