David Watson and Robert Hernandez Discuss Fresh Farms' Current Watermelon Production
RIO RICO, AZ - With an impressive portfolio of table grapes, melons, and a large variety of vegetables, Fresh Farms is a year-round produce supplier that knows a thing or two about bringing top-quality offerings to retailers’ produce departments. I recently spoke with the company’s David Watson, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and Robert Hernandez, Sales, and walked away with some insight into its watermelon production, as well as some key tips for driving sales.
“The best way to maximize watermelon demand and sales is to display watermelon with whole, half, and quarter options for consumers who want smaller sizes and want to reduce waste,” says David. “This also allows them to see the internal color and firmness of the fruit. Of course, samples always work, and displaying watermelons in bins is also a winning strategy.”
Fresh Farms is currently producing watermelon in the Hermosillo region of Sonora, Mexico. As the supplier notes, pricing for the category has been very volatile as steady domestic supply comes out of the Arizona, California, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida regions.
As warmer temperatures impact the supplier’s growing regions, Fresh Farms is ensuring that its partners receive the best quality to continue meeting consumer demand for watermelons.
“Volume is currently light, but quality is holding strong. We are going through a heat wave at this moment that could change that, therefore, we are monitoring the fruit, and our quality control team in Mexico is overseeing everything that is packed,” notes Robert.
