Industry Talks St. Patrick's Day; Mike Roberts, Brianna Shales, Jen Velasquez, and Crystal Chavez Comment
SACRAMENTO, CA - First of all, a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day to the industry! I’ll be cozying up with a good beer and a delicious homemade Shepherd’s Pie later tonight, but I assume you’re not here to hear about what I’m up to—you want to know what fellow industry members are doing to celebrate!
From star recipes to cheeky promotions, we’ve got it all here.
Mike Roberts, Vice President of Produce Operations, Harps Food Stores
"Well, you have to have at least one green beer on St. Patty’s day! I will just have one along with some brats and sauerkraut and some fried red potatoes and onions! For produce, it's really all about the cabbage, we build big displays of fresh green cabbage and tie in red potatoes. For such staple items the displays actually look really good with the contrast in colors and grab the customers attention. Our store team leaders do a great job of making this a store-wide promotion and tie in Irish soda bread, shamrocks, and anything else that ties in with this fun holiday! We do our best to make sure that we have some corned beef displayed in the produce department for this holiday to make it more convenient or remind our customers that we have it available."
Brianna Shales, Marketing Director, Stemilt
“I’m actually going to be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on vacation in what I hope will be sunny Arizona! We are going there to watch the Seattle Mariners at spring training. I’m sure there will be some classic baseball stadium food to enjoy. When I think of the fruits Stemilt grows and this green and gold holiday, I think of certain apple and pear varieties. This year, green d’Anjou pears are the fruits for retailers to plan festive promotions around. It’s a great way to elevate pears and spark sales for the ultimate green reward!”
Jen Velasquez, Director of Marketing, FullTilt Marketing
"For St. Patrick’s Day, I will be trying out the recipe we created for the North Carolina Sweetpotato Commission to celebrate the holiday: Twice Baked Colcannon Sweetpotatoes! This year will be particularly fun for me as it will be the first one since we moved to Manhattan last summer. With so many Irish people here (my husband included), it should be a fun one!"
Crystal Chavez, Marketing Coordinator, Gold Coast Packing
“The Gold Coast crew loves celebrating a holiday together. This year we will honor St. Patrick’s Day with a good old fashioned potluck but with a twist: everything brought in to share must be green! Creativity and competition has taken over our team with who will bring the most interesting 'green' item. Nothing is off limits as long as it stays with the green color pallet, and of course extra points if it contains one of our favorite greens, broccoli, spinach, cilantro, or kale!”
Cheers to one of the greenest holidays of the year!
