Ippolito International's Katie Harreld Talks Fall Forecast for Brussels Sprouts
SALINAS, CA - The consumers have spoken and Brussels sprouts remain a hot item on shelves and menus alike. As suppliers continue to work to meet demand, Katie Harreld, Brussels Sprouts Commodity Manager for Ippolito International, tells me that the time of change is nearly upon us.
“We are nearing the end of the summer season, which means a transition away from our Mexico growing operations. As you might expect, when transitioning between different growing areas, supply can get tight,” Katie shares. “We have experienced a tough market for a few weeks now, where supply has been limited and Brussels sprouts demand has continually outpaced supply. But, we are already excited for our fall crop!”
Despite the fact this time of year is traditionally a challenge—ending one season and starting up the next—Katie says that, as the California season progresses and weather continues to cooperate, quality is getting better and better. In fact, she shares, buyers should be getting ready to promote for the fall.
“As we move more deeply into our California plantings, we’re leaning into promotions for our Brussels stalks. Fall is the time to get Brussels stalks onto the holiday menu. Please reach out to plan your orders with us as this supply can get reserved quickly,” she says, as resources have been a challenge coupled with light supply in previous weeks.
This is in the midst of a turnaround, though, and it sounds like buyers should be ready when that happens.
“We are getting closer and closer to more normal supplies and are forecasting good supply for the fall. We’re in steady shape as far as acreage and, without a doubt, our Coast King harvesting crews are among the best in the business! So, we’re in good hands,” she smiles.
