Kroger Boosts Disaster Response Efforts to Support Communities Affected by Hurricane Helene; Rodney McMullen Remarks
CINCINNATI, OH - Driven by its purpose To Feed the Human Spirit™, Kroger announced its support for disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Helene, committing food, water, and funds to assist affected communities. This initiative aims to uplift those impacted and facilitate recovery.
"Our associates, customers, communities, and neighbors are deeply affected in the Hurricane Helene aftermath, and we are joining forces with organizations across the country to step up and provide support," said Rodney McMullen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Rescue crews and relief organizations on the ground are only now assessing the impact and beginning the long road to recovery. We hope Kroger's support will feed the spirit of those who are affected and those helping the communities rebuild."
According to a press release, Kroger enabled customers to contribute to relief efforts by rounding up their purchases to the nearest dollar or donating at checkout stations in Harris Teeter and Kroger locations across the Atlanta and Nashville divisions. These donations, alongside a matching grant from the Kroger Co. Foundation, benefited the American Red Cross, an organization the foundation supports annually for disaster relief. Customers were encouraged to donate in-store through the end of October.
In addition to monetary contributions, Kroger distributed truckloads of drinkable water and ice to communities in need and planned ongoing distributions as the situation evolved. The retailer aimed to expand its relief efforts in response to emerging community needs.
Kroger also supported the United Service Organizations (USO) by sponsoring the USO | Kroger Mobile Canteens, which provided food and rest for National Guard members and military personnel involved in disaster relief efforts. Furthermore, Kroger expressed gratitude to vendors from the Kroger Wellness Festival who donated products to hurricane relief after the event was canceled due to Hurricane Helene's impact.
Through these combined efforts, Kroger demonstrated its commitment to aiding communities in distress and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.
