Hazel Tech® Partners With WP Produce to Launch Hazel™ O Brand
CHICAGO, IL - There is nothing quite so devastating as cutting open an avocado to find that it has already turned to dark brown mush. Hazel Technologies and its new partner, WP Produce, are saying “no more!” as they have revealed the launch of the Hazel™ O product line that will be incorporated into WP’s highly anticipated 2-count bag launch. Committed to fighting food waste and extending the shelf-life of produce, the duo has already rolled out the collaboration to 180 stores nationwide.
“Organics are one of the fastest growing segments in the produce aisle, but also have more shelf-life challenges than their conventional counterparts,” said Aidan Mouat, CEO of Hazel Technologies. “Developing a next-generation organic solution to address organic shelf life is one more step in our company’s mission to provide holistic supply chain solutions for the fresh food industry.”
The new Hazel O product is a sachet that can be placed in a box of produce right after harvest and packing to reduce ethylene sensitivity, according to a press release.
Ethylene is the hormone that many produce varieties release during ripening that can trigger softness, further ripening, and eventual spoiling. With the new technology, Hazel Tech’s innovation will not only prevent over-ripening, but food waste as well.
“Incorporating Hazel O into our supply chain is just one of the many steps WP Produce has taken to grow the tropical avocado category for our retail customers,” said Chris Gonzalez, VP of Sales at WP Produce. “Offering consumers across the nation the convenience and food-safety protection of a 2-count bag, plus usage tips and other education, and the ultimate shelf-life, was too prime of an opportunity to pass up.”
Part of the partnership between WP and Hazel Tech includes the new WP Product 2-count Desbry® tropical avocado bags being co-branded with the “Fresher with Hazel Tech®” slogan. Shipments have already been sent out to over 180 retailers across the U.S., giving stores not only easily marketable fresh produce, but products that are environmentally friendly and reduce our carbon footprint.
