Homegrown Organic Farms Details Citrus, Kiwi, and Blueberry Seasons
PORTERVILLE, CA - Many of us go in search of the secret to happiness, and in the fresh produce industry, we’re also eager to uncover the secret to supplying top-notch produce. I suspect that Homegrown Organic Farms may be keeping this secret to itself, as the grower is constantly bringing premium product to market. To see what all the company is working on at this time, I had the chance to chat with Marketing Manager Cherie France.
First up, we dove into Homegrown’s one-stop shop organic citrus season, which is currently underway.
“We’re harvesting Navels, Cara Caras, Pummelos, Clementines, Satsumas, lemons, and grapefruit. Depending on the variety, we’re seeing similar numbers to last year with some varieties slightly below last year’s volume,” Cherie began. “Weather is an interesting double-edged sword, as we haven’t had rain to interrupt our harvest schedules or cause potential quality issues, but we will still need the rain long-term.”
In addition to its citrus production out of three major California growing regions, Homegrown Organic has begun its inaugural kiwi season featuring the new Jumbo kiwi variety. We reported in July that initial offerings of Homegrown’s kiwis include bulk, 1 lb, and 3 lb clamshells.
“We shipped our first loads a couple of weeks ago! Production for our kiwi program is here in the Central San Joaquin Valley, near Reedley, CA,” Cherie told me.
Homegrown Organic is not stopping there, though, as the grower has also rolled out its new import blueberry season with U.S. fresh-packed fruit. The company is importing FairTrade USA certified organic blueberries from Chile while also providing a limited supply out of California, which will last through February.
“We have excellent supplies and great quality! All of the imported fruit is fresh packed in Kingsburg, CA, to ensure the highest quality fruit for our customers and their consumers,” Cherie said. “Our import program has been an excellent opportunity to provide customers with a year-round, high-quality organic blueberry program.”
