SEATTLE, WA - We in the fresh produce industry all have our own opinions about private labels, so it is always interesting to see what retail leaders are doing with their programs. Last week, reports surfaced that Amazon would be trimming its own private label brands with the possibility of exiting the business altogether.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon has begun to reduce the number of private label items it sells in an effort to alleviate regulatory pressure. As of 2020, the retailer owned 45 of its own brands, culminating with over 243,000 products. People familiar with the matter reportedly stated that the decision comes as the result of disappointing sales for many of the items.

Executives have been reducing the amount of private label items ordered over the past six months, discussing plans to trim the brands by more than half. The source stated that this decision came after former Head of Global Consumer Business Dave Clark encouraged the company to hone in on one specific private label brand.

As to how this move will impact Amazon’s fresh programs, we are still unsure. But, as always, AndNowUKnow will keep you informed as we learn more.
