Meijer Enters a New Market with Multiple Supercenters
AKRON, OHIO - Although many retailers are betting on e-commerce, Meijer continues to look to brick-and-mortar as its saving grace. The company recently announced the openings of three supercenters: one in Stow and two others in Northeast Ohio communities. These two supercenters, located in Avon and Mentor, are each roughly 155,000-square-feet and feature grocery on one end and department store merchandise on the other.
“We’ve been looking at this area for a while,” said Ken Barclay, Meijer’s Cleveland Market Director, as reported by Akron Beacon Journal. “Northeast Ohio is a big market for us.”
Indeed, with the addition of these three supercenters, Meijer’s Ohio store count goes up to 42.
Barclay noted that Meijer wants to differentiate itself from competitors by being a better fit within local communities. The Stow supercenter, for instance, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will feature a wide variety of produce as well as locally-sourced products.
“It’s really like a one-stop shop,” Barclay commented.
As retailers either dial into brick-and-mortar or e-commerce, it’s difficult to tell what side the grocery coin will land on, but AndNowUKnow will be here to report on the latest.
