LONDON, ENGLAND - When it comes to success in the retail sector, convenience is key. Many shoppers want to quickly get in and out when they go grocery shopping, and Aldi has answered their requests. The retailer recently announced it has begun trialing new, checkout-free technology in London, England, which allows shoppers to simply walk out of the store, bypassing a till.

“We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings,” said Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland. “We are really excited to be testing this concept that will enable customers to pick from our range of quality products, all available at unbeatable prices, then leave the store without having to pay at a till.”

The new concept will optimize a smartphone app that consumers will be able to scan upon entering the store, according to a press release. After that, shoppers can collect their groceries and leave the store without having to visit a register.

Aldi’s associates are currently testing the store, and further trials will later be carried out by members of the public. The first concept store will employ approximately the same number of employees as a typical Aldi Local to improve accuracy.

This announcement follows the company’s launch of its click-and-collect concept last year, which is now available in more than 200 locations across the U.K.
