Publix Building Technology Campus for IT Workers
LAKELAND, FL - Expansion is the name of the game for Publix Super Markets as it is growing not only its physical footprint but possibly its online impact as well. With the recent purchase of a fourth building in Lakeland, Florida, the retailer is building a technology campus for its information technology workers, which could bolster its online presence and technological developments.
Publix currently has its IT staff working out of three buildings in downtown Lakeland, reporting from Lkldnow explained. In January, the retailer purchased a block-long limestone structure that once housed FedEx for $8.6 million. Currently, Publix employs approximately 1,200 IT workers in the downtown region.
The grocer also owns an old Florida Citrus Mutual building that has sat vacant since 2016 when it was purchased for $3.1 million. On August 21, the Lakeland City Commission will vote on whether to tear it down to create more parking for Publix employees.
With this project, Publix could bring a multitude of high-paying jobs to downtown Lakeland.
