GOODYEAR, AZ - As the industry buckles down after discount retailer Aldi announced major expansion plans earlier this month, the company looks to be taking hold in the Phoenix, AZ, metropolitan area with a new distribution center in Goodyear. According to local news source AZCENTRAL, the retailer has entered an agreement to open an office and distribution facility by 2020.

There are currently no Aldi supermarkets in the Phoenix area, but it is speculated that the company will be making an entrance into the market.

"The company is currently exploring opportunities in Arizona as well as multiple other markets from coast to coast," spokeswoman Nisa Kiang told the source. "We look forward to sharing news as plans are solidified."

Aldi is reportedly purchasing 27 acres for $3.6 million from Goodyear, with another 42 acres coming from a real-estate developer. Currently, the sale of the land for the distribution center is in escrow, though Michelle Lawrie, Director of Economic Development in Goodyear, told the source the deal is expected to be finalized by the end of 2017.
