CARLISLE, PA - As sustainability and environmental consciousness continue to reign as leading issues concerning shoppers as they hit the aisles, The GIANT Company has announced that it has joined the GreenChill program to help reduce its environmental impacts.

John Ponnett, Senior Vice President of Retail Operations, The GIANT Company“From reducing waste across our operations and the sustainable sourcing of the products we sell to seeking out opportunities for energy efficiencies and creating pollinator habitats, healing the planet is something we take seriously at The GIANT Company,” said John Ponnett, Senior Vice President of Retail Operations at The GIANT Company. “Our partnership with GreenChill reinforces this commitment and highlights the steps we are taking to reduce refrigerant emissions from our stores and perishable distribution centers, helping to ensure a better tomorrow for the families we serve.”

The GreenChill program is a voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership that includes not only grocery retailers, but refrigeration system manufacturers and chemical manufacturers as they aim to reduce the emissions from refrigerant, thereby lowering their environmental footprint.

The GIANT Company has announced that it has partnered with the EPA's GreenChill program to help reduce its environmental impacts

In joining GreenChill, the partnership will provide The GIANT Company and all other industry stakeholders with assistance in transitioning their operations to use environmentally friendly refrigerants. According to a press release, GreenChill will help to reduce refrigerant usage, eliminate refrigerant leaks, guide companies in implementing the best environmental practices, and adopting green refrigeration technology.

Currently, there are more than 12,500 GreenChill partner stores across the United States.

Kirsten Cappel, GreenChill Program Manger, Environmental Protection Agency“The GreenChill Partnership is thrilled to welcome The GIANT Company,” commented U.S. EPA GreenChill Program Manager Kirsten Cappel. “By entering the Partnership, The GIANT Company joins exemplary leaders in the food retail industry who are committed to improving their refrigerant management practices and protecting the environment.”

As The GIANT Company has entered the partnership, the retailer is working to perform refrigerant conversions while also installing leak detectors and replacing older, less environmentally friendly refrigeration units within its 190 stores.

The refrigerant used by supermarkets can be harmful to the environment when emitted into the atomosphere. GreenChill helps reduce the amount of emissions created by its partner stores, and if every grocery retailer reduced its leak levels to the GreenChill average, the retail industry could save more than $160 million in refrigerant replacement costs and reduce emissions by about 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year.
