Equitable Food Initiative Celebrates National Farmworker Awareness Week
WASHINGTON, DC - At the heart of this industry is one common goal: getting fresh produce into the hands of more consumers. Achieving this goal would be impossible without the 425,000 farmworkers that are constantly working toward it. As National Farmworker Awareness Week approaches, Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) is encouraging growers, consumers, and agricultural associations to share messages honoring these workers.
“One positive thing to come out of the pandemic is that farmworkers were recognized as essential, but this is by no means a new concept,” said Director of Marketing Communications LeAnne Ruzzamenti. “They have always played a vital role in the food supply chain, and in fact are the root of the supply chain, ensuring the availability, quality, and safety of our food. They should be celebrated every day, and those of us working in the food system need to ensure they have safe, healthy, and respectful working conditions.”
Taking place March 25–31, National Farmworker Awareness Week is a designated week of action that brings attention to the challenges that farmworkers face and the essential contributions they make to the supply chain, a press release noted.
Industry members can take part in the action by downloading EFI’s free communications toolkit, which includes ready-to-use graphics, logos, messages, and hashtags that can be used to honor hardworking farmworkers, as well as creating their own graphics to tell their own unique stories.
Industry members and consumers can help amplify this important message by hosting socially distant events in celebration of farmworkers, providing live content for social media channels that feature farmworker interviews detailing their jobs, and creating content or videos for social media using the #AlwaysEssential hashtag.
EFI also encourages consumers and industry members to ask state governors or legislative officials to draft a proclamation supporting Farmworker Awareness Week, as well as contact local media and ask them to share information about the role of agriculture and farmworkers in local economies during the week.
