FRESNO, CA - I must be wearing green-colored glasses, as I’m not only seeing the springtime hue outside my window, but across the supply chain as well. Baloian Farms is in the heart of its green bell pepper transition, opening up the opportunity for more retailers to turn their produce aisles—and bottom lines—green.

“We started harvesting this season’s spring California green bell peppers on March 30 in Thermal, California, and we are currently finishing our Sonora, Mexico, production. As for our Sinaloa, Mexico, production, we are harvesting at a steady pace and will continue through April,” said Jeremy Lane, Sales Manager. “Our California production is a welcome sight, as it helps us maintain our supply position to service our year-round business.”

On top of this movement, the supplier is currently receiving all inbound harvest from Sonora and Sinaloa into Nogales, Arizona. This includes green bell peppers, red bell peppers, eggplant, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, and yellow squash. Jeremy added that Baloian also has a substantial value-added operation out of Nogales this time of year, which will transition to Fresno, California, in late spring.

Meanwhile, in Thermal, Baloian is closing in on the end of harvest for its seasonal wet veg program. Since last fall, the company has been offering fresh romaine, romaine hearts, green leaf, red leaf, butter leaf, cauliflower, spinach, celery, brussels sprouts, and green onions.

“Weather conditions have been excellent in all growing districts,” Jeremy told me. “As the new season gets underway, our retail and foodservice partners can expect smooth supply transitions, excellent quality, and a high level of customer service.”

When it comes to making the transition, Jeremy explained that logistics can pose the largest challenges. Even so, Baloian is well positioned to complete the process as planned.

“Whether we are moving equipment for harvest or shifting customers from one loading district to the next, it takes the coordinated efforts of all parties involved to assure a seamless transition,” Jeremy concluded. “The successful movement of many parts daily is required to accomplish what we do, and that requires real logistical expertise.”
