LA QUINTA, CA - Between upcoming celebrations for the Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Easter, I’m willing to bet that bell peppers are one category finding their place on nearly every shopper’s grocery list. Digging into the specifics of the Mexican bell pepper market, I recently spoke with Prime Time International’s Victoria Kovacevich, Marketing Manager.

Victoria Kovacevich, Marketing Manager, Prime Time International“We are currently in full swing south of the border, with both hothouse and field-grown pepper production and harvest throughout mainland Mexico and Baja California. Additionally, sweet mini peppers and asparagus are being harvested in these regions as well,” says Victoria.

Prime Time is currently shipping these items from Nogales, Arizona, and San Diego and Coachella, California. Benefitting the supplier’s pepper production, weather impacts in Mexico have been minimal this season compared to other growing regions.

As Victoria points out to me, dips in market pricing are relatively normal for this time frame for the bell pepper category. As the season begins to wind down in the spring, Prime Time anticipates a decrease in volume across the board and an upward swing in pricing.

“Prime Time continues to produce premium product and promotable volumes for the spring season, and merchandising and promotional opportunities for peppers are tremendous in late winter and early spring,” Victoria adds. “The Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Easter are all great times for bell pepper promotions. Supplies of colored peppers are plentiful, pricing is low, and there are fewer attractive items in the produce section like treefruit and grapes.”

How will you take hold of this versatile category and secure a sizable sales boost?
