Mac Riggan Discusses the Advantages of the Chelan Fresh Lucy™ Family of Apples
CHELAN, WA - What are retailers looking for in their produce departments? A point of differentiation. In a sea of new and upcoming varieties, a beacon of uniqueness will entice the consumer every time. This season, Chelan Fresh is providing that point of differentiation with its Lucy™ family of apples.
“This year’s crop of Lucy Glo and Lucy Rose apples is probably one of the best I've ever seen, presenting more red color in the flesh than in years past,” Mac Riggan, Director of Marketing, shares with me. “Everybody's been wanting an apple that really stands out in their produce departments. These apples have a distinctive outside appearance and flavor attributes and texture consumers are craving.”
Yes, red flesh. Attention grabbed. Mac is already diving into the demo possibilities at retail. Cut the apples open, and share slices with shoppers—it is a win-win.
Chelan’s Lucy apples have a fairly quick season, giving them an almost exclusive nature. They kick off in October and Chelan is done with the variety by Christmas.
As Mac describes, the Lucy Glo has a very unique yellowish-green color and has a tasty and tart flavor profile with a hint of sweetness which is naturally red on the inside.
“The Lucy Rose is red, but it has a unique, almost sparkly nature to it; also boasting a sweet flavor with a hint of berry, beautiful red skin on the outside, and naturally red inside,” Mac reveals. “What's truly fun about Lucy Glo and Lucy Rose is that they eat really well due to their heritage—their mother is a Honeycrisp. These are two of the red flesh apples out in the market that are really meeting the demands of what a commercially viable apple needs.”
The apple trailblazer offers Lucy apples in a bulk pack and 2 lb pouch bags for customer preference.
The moment I saw these vibrant apples I could not take my eyes off of them. For consumers who eat with their eyes first, this is sure to be a boon for retailers everywhere.
