CALIFORNIA - The state’s first atmospheric river storm of the season may be landing across California this week, according to recent reports from the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists are still refining their forecasts due to the difficulty of predicting atmospheric river storms, SFGATE reported. However, as of Sunday morning, experts expressed high confidence that northern parts of the North Bay will be impacted by the strong atmospheric river beginning Wednesday. These impacts could also shift slightly southward closer to the San Francisco Bay, the weather service noted. Light rain is in the forecast for Sunday, with scattered showers anticipated over the Bay Area after 4 p.m. and into the evening.

Southern California is expected to stay relatively dry in this storm. According to the source, the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes is currently predicting that the brunt of the storm will hit Northern California between the Oregon border and the North Bay.

As Wednesday nears, the forecast should come together with more clarity.

“We will be closely monitoring and updating the forecast for any shifts that may occur in the exact location of expected impacts, and will provide more detail on expected rainfall amounts as details become more clear,” the weather service’s Bay Area office said Sunday.
