Onions 52 Spotlights Production Processes and Recent Expansions
SYRACUSE, UT - Steeped in industry experience and committed to quality, Onions 52 wants to be the go-to supplier and one-stop onion shop to fulfill buyers’ needs. Our promise to deliver onions year-round is embedded in everything we do, starting with our name all the way down to our company’s culture.
Offering both organic and conventional onions in red, yellow, white, sweet, organic and new, tearless and sweet Smileys™, we work in growing regions that span from Washington, Utah, and Oregon to New Mexico and Texas.
In order to bring onions to our customers 52 weeks a year, our growing, packing, and shipping are all done in-house. We’re a vertically integrated company, with a family of farmers that have been doing this since the 1940s. We pride ourselves on being one of the nation’s leading grower-shippers of onions.
Our planting process shows care from end to end. Farmers prepare the field with cover crop to enrich soil and prevent erosion. Irrigation is set with either drip, furrow, or overhead—in Washington, we pump water through underground pipes to our farm.
This pipeline took years to complete and is a testament to our dedication to innovation. The field is then cared for with fertilizer, weed, and pest control.
After that, it’s time to harvest! Onion tops are topped or fall over naturally before being lifted from the soil. They are then put into rows to cure, which ensures good quality and storage capabilities.
Once the onions are conveyed into a truck, they’re on their way to storage, where they stay for many months. We like to say they sleep in those storage sheds, which are climate and humidity-controlled.
Now we move onto the packing process. Sorted onto conveyor belts to meet grade and quality standards, our onions can be packed in bags as small as 2 pounds and as large as 3,000-pound tote bags! Once they’ve been bagged, they are shipped on pallets to their next destination.
Because of our extensive reach, we’re able to keep our trucks rolling, and our onions are delivered 52 weeks a year. With Onions 52, there’s never a day without onions.
Onions 52 began with a small group of Utah farmers gathering together in the 1940s to sell their produce to communities and grocers. Since then, we’ve developed our packing and shipping operations, expanded our partnerships with growers, and become a trusted source for onions in the industry.
Most recently, we have expanded our East Coast network by adding a new distribution and packing facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.
This strategic investment in our customers and growers will help us better serve East Coast retailers and foodservice partners.
