Domex Superfresh Growers® Pear Update
YAKIMA, WA - It’s a wrap for Domex Superfresh Growers in harvesting the majority of its pears for the season, with good quality on a relatively snack-sized crop.
“Pouch bags are key drivers of the pear category and our crop lends itself to bags this year. But retailers should also always promote bulk pears, to optimize dollars,” Mike Preacher, Director of Marketing, shared with me. “We recommend displaying and promoting pears together (Red Pear, D’Anjou, and Bosc), and in the vicinity of apples. And don’t forget to offer a complementary Organic SKU for each variety. Winter is a great time for promoting pears.”
This year’s volume was a little lighter compared to last, with sizing on the smaller side. However, the team is confident on having the numbers needed to meet demand.
“Pear demand and movement look pretty good this winter, but we get questions from retailers on how to improve sales. We have the volume to promote all of the promotional suggestions listed above,” Mike explained.
Breaking down the highlights, the Superfresh team boxed and shipped the majority of its Red Bartletts, Bosc, D’Anjou, and Red D’Anjou pears by mid to late December, with about 743K boxes remaining of Bartletts just before Christmas.
When I ask about weather, Mike said it hadn’t had too much sway on the fruit and will only have an effect on them in the future when they are en route.
“No. All of the pears have been harvested, so weather affects nothing other than the trucks transporting them!” he said.
With plenty more still on the horizon for the Superfresh team as it adds another successful pear peak to its belt, keep checking in with AndNowUKnow for all the latest.
