Lidl US Announces New York Locations
STATEN ISLAND, NY – German-based discount retailer Lidl has been making headlines in recent weeks, as the company’s CEO publically weighed changes in tactics to more efficiently grow its stateside business. And now the company has introduced plans to enter the competitive New York grocery market—acquiring a 36,000-square-foot portion of The Staten Island Mall’s new expansion, according to local news source SILive.com.
"This is a milestone for the Staten Island Mall," Senior General Manager of The Staten Island Mall James Easley told the news source. "Adding our first grocery store is part of our transformation to becoming an all-encompassing community hub. We are honored to be home to Lidl's first New York location and know our guests will embrace this exceptional grocer."
Since entering the U.S. market in June of 2017, Lidl has pursued an aggressive expansion plan, expanding into several states throughout the Midwest and Southeast. The company’s recent expansion into New York, though, may mark a refocused expansion effort after a Reuters report earlier this month suggested that the company is slowing expansion plans and targeting smaller-format stores.
Will Lidl's change in tactics be rewarded with continued success as the retailer continues to make headway in the states? AndNowUKnow will continue to report with updates on the retailer’s U.S. expansion efforts as changes occur.
