Officials in Greece Uncover 221 Pounds of Cocaine in Banana Shipment
GREECE - Once again, innocent produce fell into the hands of a nefarious bunch. Luckily, those cracking down on crime spotted the culprits.
In northern Greece, police seized 100 kilos and 700 grams (roughly 221 pounds) of cocaine and arrested eight individuals involved in the case.
According to a report from The National Herald, the drugs had a street value of tens of millions of euros. The exact cost in American dollars was not given. All of this was hidden in a container of bananas which had recently arrived at the port of Thessaloniki, Greece, from Ecuador.
Once docked, the drugs were then taken by truck to a company that imports and exports fruits.
Luckily, the jig was up! Among those arrested were the company’s representatives, customs agents, and truck drivers, all of whom are set to appear before a Thessaloniki prosecutor on drug trafficking charges.
Did the criminals hope they could make like a banana and split? Not this time!
