Five Tons of Cocaine Found in Shipment of Bananas in Colombia



MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA - It appears that folks are looking to bananas for much more than their smoothie needs. A shipment of the fruit from Colombia was seized when five tons of hidden cocaine were found before being exported to Belgium, according to Euro News.

The alleged substance was worth a reported 350 million euros, equivalent to 430 million USD, and was found tucked within the shipment on Tuesday, March 6th, positioned in Turbo’s cargo terminal, an Antioquia department-based port found on the Caribbean Sea.

According to the news source, the drugs belonged to the Gulf Clan, a criminal gang based in the country, and the alleged cocaine haul is the largest in Colombia this year.

The leader of the Gulf Clan, Dairo Antonio Usuga—known as Otoniel—is sought after by the U.S., which has a reward for information about him that leads to his arrest or death for up to 5 million USD.
