EMERYVILLE, CA - Grocery Outlet has taken an impressive step in the fight to reduce food insecurity. Over 400 of the retailer’s stores participated in its eleventh annual Independence from Hunger® Food Drive campaign from June 23 to July 31, ultimately raising over $2.8 million.

Eric Lindberg, Chief Executive Officer, Grocery Outlet“We are honored and excited to have raised over $2.8 million to combat food insecurity through Independence from Hunger this year, equating to 1.4 million meals for families in need,” said Eric Lindberg, Chief Executive Officer. “By leveraging our strong local partnerships built by our independent operators, the campaign continues to offer support to the communities we serve.”

Over a decade ago, Grocery Outlet made a commitment with its Independence from Hunger campaign to find solutions that ensure all families have access to high-quality meals, recognizing that many agencies that combat food insecurity face the highest demand during the summer months.

Grocery Outlet raised over $2.8 million for its eleventh annual Independence from Hunger® Food Drive campaign

Since its inception in 2011, the Independence from Hunger campaign has garnered over $14 million in donations nationwide, according to a press release. During the initiative, Grocery Outlet customers and associates were encouraged to contribute to the campaign in several ways, including:

  • Purchasing a pre-made food bag filled with an assortment of nonperishable items
  • Give $5, Get $5 at the register. Donating $5 or more in a single transaction and receive a $5 coupon
  • Contribution of a monetary donation through in-store and online platforms

Each of Grocery Outlet’s more than 400 store locations identified local food agencies and nonprofits in their area to partner with throughout the campaign, and Grocery Outlet's San Francisco Bay Area partner, Alameda County Community Food Bank, received all donations completed online. As explained in the release, the retailer also partnered with regional-area partners such as Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and Oregon Food Bank, which all received generous donations from several long-time supplier partners.
