TUCSON, AZ - During an inspection of a Chinese vegetable shipment at the Port of Nogales late last month, something seemed to be a little out of place. That certain something amidst the veggies, officials soon found out, was quite a substantial sum of over $1 million worth of meth.

In a bust that represents the second largest seizure of meth ever in the Tucson Field Office, officials discovered more than 350 pounds of methamphetamine in a shipment of Chinese vegetables, according to a press release. The drugs, which were concealed within the floor of a trailer, were valued by officers at $1.06 million.

At the end of the discovery, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 51-year-old man from Obregon, Sonora, Mexico at the Mariposa Commercial Facility, for attempting to smuggle the illicit product through this leafy disguise.

All of the meth and the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt were seized, with the man being turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

Let this be yet another lesson to those of you who would seek to do dastardly deeds with the aid of fresh produce—veggie smugglers never prosper.
