SALINAS VALLEY, CA - There are few things in this world I consider unshakeable truths, but one of them is that Iceberg lettuce belongs on a burger. And in salad wraps. Even stir-fried with soy sauce and fresh ginger. The seemingly endless applications for this lettuce makes it an in-demand variety, and it’s essential for buyers in both the retail and foodservice sectors to know the ins and outs of the Iceberg market.

To help illuminate it, I spoke with Stephanie Cantero, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for The Nunes Company.

“The state of the current Iceberg lettuce market is strong. The weather conditions in the Salinas Valley have been normal with cool moderate temperatures resulting in excellent quality and good yields,” Stephanie shared with me. “The weather pattern continues to be mild going into July with ideal growing conditions for promotable volume.”

That volume is predicted to remain strong, with promotable opportunities reaching into August.

“For consumers in times of economic uncertainty, whole head produce such as Iceberg lettuce can carry more value in comparison to processed value-added items,” Stephanie imparted. “This is a perfect item to merchandise throughout the summer for salad recipes during picnic and grilling season.”

Stephanie summed up that Iceberg is seeing ideal growing conditions, giving excellent quality and high yields. It’s not summer until there’s Iceberg in the cart, and shoppers should know it.
