Ocean Mist® Farms' Ben Wilson Details Current California Brussels Sprouts Market
CASTROVILLE, CA - Whether crisped up in the oven or air fryer or thrown on the barbecue for an added smoky taste, Brussels sprouts’ unique flavor lends itself to various eating occasions and preparation methods, keeping them popular amongst consumers. Luckily for retailers, Ocean Mist® Farms is kicking off its Castroville, California, season, just in time for summer.
“Quality is excellent in all areas,” Ben Wilson, Commodity Account Manager, tells me. “We recently had a heat spell, but our Brussels sprouts do not appear to be affected.”
Throughout the year, the grower utilizes four growing regions: Coachella, California; Mexico; Oxnard, California; and Castroville, California. Currently, Ocean Mist is finishing out its Oxnard and Mexico Brussels sprout seasons and is moving on to Castroville.
Ben reports that volumes are good and have remained relatively similar to what Ocean Mist experienced last year. However, the Brussels sprouts market is coming off of a tight period.
“When the market was tight, prices were in the $40s,” he explains. “As supplies have improved, the market is now in the mid to high $20s, and there are more promotional opportunities.”
In addition to good volumes, Ocean Mist is also reporting great demand as consumers look to stock up on the veg, which Ben urges buyers to take advantage of.
“The best advice I can give a retailer is to partner with a high-quality supplier like Ocean Mist Farms because our consistent size and quality will bolster sales,” says Ben.
With summer and grilling season just around the corner, make sure you have Brussels sprouts to provide your shoppers with the versatile, healthy options they desire.
