REIDSVILLE, GA - There’s nothing quite like a sweet onion. As we near the official start of Vidalia® season, we were fortunate enough to receive word from Shuman Farms on the current crop outlook of the Peruvian sweet onions filling the gaps until our domestic crop begins.

“Shuman Farms is currently shipping premium sweet onions from Peru. Quality continues to be good, and we expect consistent, promotable supply through March,” commented John Shuman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Comfort foods with a healthy twist are trending as we start 2023. The health benefits of sweet onions, in addition to their versatility and sweet, mild flavor, makes them a perfect item for any classic dish that needs a little lightening up.”

Shuman Farms encourages its retail partners to merchandise sweet onions throughout the produce department with other like items to help promote healthy eating. With Super Bowl coming up, these onions are a welcome addition to family meals and snacking options.

Shuman went on to remark upon the start of Georgia’s Vidalia season. As I mentioned earlier, it occurs at the beginning of April—which just so happens to coincide with my birthday!

“Over the Christmas holiday, record-low temperatures swept through much of the United States, including Southeast Georgia where we experienced multiple nights in the mid to high teens,” Shuman detailed. “After giving the crop time to recover over the past few weeks, we do see some reduction in plant population across the industry. The crop is now turning the corner and appears to be growing as expected. With good growing conditions going forward, we are optimistic that we will have a near normal crop and look forward to the upcoming Vidalia onion season.”
