Tops Friendly Markets Invests Over $6M in Pennsylvania Store Remodels; Ron Ferri Details
WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - Tops Friendly Markets’ Pennsylvania stores are getting a sizable boost, as the retailer has announced a significant $6 million investment in five of the state’s locations. The money will go toward large-scale renovation efforts that will refresh the store experience and create more space for additional fresh food and produce options.
“These significant investments are already underway at several locations and will elevate the customer experience and provide expanded access to fresh foods at our local stores. We’re excited to officially reopen three store locations soon and also finish off the additional renovation work,” said Ron Ferri, Executive Vice President of Operations and Distribution. “At Tops, we constantly evaluate the best ways to serve our local customers and reinvest into our communities. These latest enhancements will help make life a little easier for shoppers by focusing on affordable, easy-to-prepare meal options and a wider selection of products.”
The five stores in Erie, Waterford, Union City, and Meadville, Pennsylvania, represent over 225,000 square feet of retail space, according to a release. The stores will be refreshed from top to bottom with new exterior paint, an enhanced façade, and refreshed landscaping. New décor, energy-efficient lighting, and state-of-the-art self-checkouts will be implemented inside.
Expanded fresh food areas will give shoppers more produce options, including local and organic selections. The bakeries will offer a larger selection of custom cakes and pastries, while the deli and carry-out café areas will provide more on-the-go items and affordable restaurant-style options.
Renovations at the two Erie locations, along with the store in Waterford, are scheduled to be completed in the coming weeks. The Union City and Meadville locations will see renovations conclude in late summer or early fall.
With these ongoing renovations and reinvestment, Tops has decided to close a location when its lease expires this summer. It will officially cease operations on Friday, June 23.
“Closing a store is always a difficult decision,” Ferri added. “The expiration of the lease combined with the proximity of other Tops locations, as well as the new amenities, we’ll now be able to add at those locations all factored into the decision. We are offering all affected associates positions at nearby stores.”
