IRVINE, CA - Good morning, AndNowUKnow readers!

Today I am bringing you some of the category and weather news from around the industry. Check back twice weekly to see where the rain is falling, the sun is shining, and everything in between.

HURRICANE DORIAN AND WHO COULD BE AFFECTED

Dorian is officially a hurricane and is expected to strengthen over the coming days. Since Tuesday, Dorian’s path changed significantly moving to the north avoiding Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. By avoiding land, it has allowed the storm to stay intact and gather force as it heads towards Florida and possibly Georgia. It is anticipated to make landfall sometime Monday.

The cone in the above graph is an estimate of where the eye of the storm could come ashore. As you can see, the cone ranges the entire length of Florida and even into parts of Georgia so to predict where it will come ashore at this point would be premature.

Current maximum sustained winds are 85 mph but the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is anticipating the storm to strengthen over the next several days.

Predicted rainfall by the NHC is the following:

• The central Bahamas: 1 to 2 inches, isolated 4 inches
• The northwestern Bahamas: 3 to 6 inches, isolated 8 inches
• Coastal sections of the Southeast United States: 5 to 10 inches, isolated 15 inches

Who and what could be affected?

At this point there doesn’t appear to be any fall/winter crops in the ground in central or southern Florida. The areas that could be affected would be southern Georgia where fall crops such as bell peppers, tomatoes, green beans, etc. should already be in the growth stage. These growing regions tend to start harvest in early to mid-October, so any heavy rains or high winds could possibly affect the crop.

COOLING TREND COMING SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

It appears there is cooler weather coming to the Northwest and Midwest starting next week. Look for temperatures across the regions to cool off the second half of next week with a significant drop coming next Saturday. Lows across the Midwest will be in the lower 50°s by Saturday, with Michigan dipping into the 40°s. Current low temperatures across the region are still mostly in the mid to upper 60°s.

POSSIBLE RAIN NEXT WEEK IN MID-ATLANTIC

Next Friday and Saturday, Sept 6 and 7, there is a possibility for a storm to bring anywhere from 0.50” to 1.00” of rain to the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey. These regions are still in their summer harvest. Will update you again next week.
