NEW YORK - From the macro standpoint, as we enter 2025, change is in the air. The incoming administration’s goal to “Make America Healthy Again” is a major opportunity for the wholesale sector to capitalize on. More than ever, consumers want healthy options.

According to a release, fresh produce is central with fruits up 4 percent year over year (YOY) (‘23 vs ‘24) and vegetables up 1.2 percent YOY.

Three key areas to consider in 2025:

Exotics - U.S. consumers are becoming more adventurous in their produce choices, driven by interest in global cuisines and new food trends. Expect to see continued growth in demand for exotic fruits like dragon fruit, papaya, and jackfruit, as well as the expansion of niche categories like functional foods (added health benefits like antioxidants and adaptogens).

Technology - Advances in agriculture, including the use of AI, robotics, and vertical farming, are expected to significantly improve crop yields, reduce waste, and enhance the sustainability of production methods. Innovations in packaging, such as eco-friendly materials and reduced plastic use, will also resonate with environmentally conscious consumers.

D'Arrigo New York outlined some key areas of growth to consider as we look at what's in store for the industry in 2025

Wellness - As consumers place increasing emphasis on healthy eating, demand for fresh fruits and vegetables is anticipated to rise. According to industry reports, the fresh produce sector could see annual growth rates of 3–4 percent over the next few years. Particularly, categories like organic produce and plant-based options are expected to see significant growth, driven by the rise in plant-based diets and a focus on nutrient-dense foods.
