Dollar General Opens Produce-Forward Format; Josh Allen Comments

DAYTON, OH - Familiar to most as an affordable and plentiful general store, Dayton, Ohio, shoppers might start connecting Dollar General with fresh produce too. Dollar General’s DG Market could expand off Miami’s turnpike, west of Interstate 75′s busy Austin Boulevard interchange. Plans for the DG Market store are to offer fresh produce, dairy products, other refrigerated foods, frozen foods, as well as assorted fresh meats. General merchandise will still be available.

Dollar General store has approximately 8,000 square feet of selling space and a DG Market store typically has approximately 10,000 square feet

The company replied to Dayton Daily News that, “At this time, we are currently in [the] due diligence phase for a new Dollar General location in Miamisburg, Ohio. This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in Montgomery County, but we have not committed to doing so just yet. Based on our current timeline, we anticipate having a final decision by winter 2024.”

Dollar General is looking to build the 10,640-square-foot business on a 1.2-acre property, complete with 34 parking spaces and an access drive, according to city documents acquired by Dayton Daily News. The plan is scheduled to go before the Miami Turnpike Board of Trustees on August 7.

“The new store will be a benefit for the surrounding community to provide grocery and everyday goods to local residents without having to travel into Austin Landing, or further, to obtain the same goods,” said Josh Allen, Founder of A4 Real Estate Group. Adding that the overall use and site design will have “minimal impact” to the community.

Dollar General lists two Dayton-area locations as DG Markets, one on Harrison Turnpike, and the other on N. Main Street in Dayton.

The first DG Market opened in 2003 in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Produce offerings included lemons, limes, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, salad mix, apples, strawberries, potatoes, and more.
