RIVERSIDE, CA - The demand for organics continues to rise, especially for organic bag avocados, according to Index Fresh’s Susie Rea, Sales and Business Development. She let me in on some of the details behind Index Fresh’s organic avocado program, which continues to grow in tandem with rising consumer demand.

“Organic offerings are an essential part of all retail business that we manage,” Susie began. “For growers that cultivate both conventional and organics, the organics are on average 5–15 percent of their overall crop. Growers are continuing to convert their conventional acreage into organic to keep up with demand.”

Index Fresh has been dealing in organics for 15–20 years. When I asked Susie if the company plans to expand its program, she told me that Index Fresh will continue to accommodate the industry's growing demand. She said that with supply improving yearly, there should be more opportunities to promote more steadily throughout the year.

With the impacts of inflation being felt across all categories, Susie detailed how we should be paying particularly close attention to the organic avocado segment.

“Despite the fact that organic consumers are willing to pay the extra cost for organics, inflation does have consumers taking a second look at where they are spending their money in the produce department,” Susie concluded. “It will be important that organics maintain a reasonable cost over conventional avocados in order to see continued growth in the near future.”
