Lone Star Citrus' April and TJ Flowers Share Details of Winter Season and New Holiday Promotion
MISSION, TX - Citrus has become synonymous with the holidays. How, you ask? On top of being a stocking stuffer with a storied history, sweet and tangy varieties paint smiles on everyone’s faces, young and old. I caught up with two superstars from Lone Star Citrus, April Flowers, Director of Marketing, and TJ Flowers, Vice President of Operations and Sales, to find out more about citrus as we find ourselves deep in the holiday season.
“We are currently in the prime time for the holiday gift carton push. These half carton gift boxes are highly promotable in a retail platform and are a great way to increase impulse purchases without minimizing existing SKUs,” April noted. “In addition to that, we’re looking forward to launching our next consumer promotion which highlights our Texas roots and allows consumers multiple opportunities to engage with the Winter Sweetz brand.”
Currently in the midst of harvesting its well-known Rio Star grapefruit and Marrs seeded oranges and Navel seedless oranges, Lone Star has seen exceptional weather to support its retail program push.
“There was an overlap in the California and Texas/Florida harvest seasons, which created a bit more of a stable market as we opened up. As we move into the holiday season, demand spikes and exceeds available supply which is still limited by 2-3 nights de-greening time,” TJ remarked.
April also noted that the fruits of Lone Star’s investment labor has gone into effect for this season.
“Last spring, we sent a team to UC Davis for an intensive post-harvest treatment academy. That team has now implemented their knowledge into our processing strategy and we are enjoying the benefits of that investment,” she shared.
