Perpetuating Gratitude in Guatemala; Ajay Randhawa of Perpetual Vegetable Co. Discusses
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA - In September 2024, Ajay Randhawa of Perpetual Vegetable Co. embarked on an inspiring journey to Guatemala to connect with three of their teammates and their families. The visit offered a unique glimpse into the lives of the individuals who contribute to the brand, and the bond between the communities they work with.
Playing a crucial role in its operations, Perpetual Vegetable Co. rotates around 300 international workers through its facilities each year, many of whom originate from Guatemala. While their talent team typically travels to conduct interviews with potential workers to ensure a good fit with values and operational needs, members of the Randhawa family haven’t had the opportunity to attend themselves.

Ajay felt a particular calling the past few years to do so, though his family had their reservations. “My wife and mom were concerned about potential dangers that could arise, not to mention my twins were just born last year,” he shared. “But I felt that it was very important to take this trip — to show our teammates how important they are to us, meet their families and see where they come from.”
During this visit, Ajay and the team had the chance to meet with local leaders, labor representatives and government officials, including the Vice Minister of Labor and Social Welfare. “Our farm was recognized as being among one of the best they partner with globally, reflecting our commitment to providing a safe, supportive and empowering environment for all workers,” Ajay said.
Escorted by a driver from the United Nations, the group visited the modest homes of their teammates, including one who has been employed at Perpetual Vegetable Co. for over a decade.

One particularly touching moment came during a visit to a family adorned in vibrant Guatemalan attire. They sang traditional songs, prepared a delicious meal and shared stories. Their generosity left a lasting impression on Ajay, who said, “The sense of pride is palpable. It was truly special having the mother of a current leader, who was in Canada at the time, show us a Christmas party photo of our entire team proudly displayed on their wall.”

The trip was not without its logistical challenges, but it was a life-changing adventure that will never be forgotten. “I can say this experience had a lasting impact on me. I felt incredibly humbled by their kindness and it filled me with a deep sense of gratitude, inspiring me to make our workplace, and the world, a better place,” Ajay summed up.
This journey serves as a powerful reminder on the importance of giving back and strengthening bonds with the people who make our work possible.
