In Memoriam: Bushwick Commission’s Jack Hyman, A Produce Industry Trailblazer
WOODBURY, NY - With profound sadness, the Bushwick Commission Co., Inc. and the Hyman family announce the passing of Jack Hyman, a beloved industry leader and pioneer in the potato sector. Jack passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy spanning more than six decades.
Jack devoted his life to the produce industry, shaping not only the future of Bushwick Commission but also setting a high bar across the category. As President of Bushwick Commission, Jack’s vision and leadership helped grow the company into one of the most respected potato suppliers in the nation. His deep-rooted commitment to quality was evident in every aspect of the business, from cultivating premium potatoes to ensuring their timely delivery to customers coast to coast.
A third-generation leader in the company, Jack, along with longtime business partner David Gray, ushered Bushwick into a new era. Together, they strengthened local operations and expanded national distribution, laying the groundwork for the company’s continued evolution. Today, that tradition is carried on by the fourth generation, including Ken Gray and Brad Hyman, who remain inspired by Jack’s enduring example.
Beyond his business acumen, Jack was revered for his warmth, wit, and storytelling. A natural connector, he cultivated long-lasting relationships throughout the produce world and was known for imparting wisdom through humor and heartfelt anecdotes. His presence filled a room, and his insights often left a lasting impression.
Jack’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through the values he championed: integrity, perseverance, and a tireless passion for the produce industry. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
