Big Y Foods Donates 1.5 Million Meals to Food Banks; Charles L. D’Amour Comments
SPRINGFIELD, MA - With food insecurity still a major issue in the United States, Big Y Foods is doing its part to fight hunger with its annual Sack Hunger campaign. Through the program, the retailer helps provide funds to four major food banks within its two-state marketing area, and in 2022, the grocer was able to give 1.5 million meals to those in need.
“We appreciate the generosity of our customers and employees in helping us to support our friends and neighbors. And, we are grateful to our partnerships with our four area food banks for their tireless efforts in serving those most vulnerable in our communities,” said President and Chief Executive Officer, Charles L. D’Amour. “Being able to provide another 1.5 million meals through our Sack Hunger program helps us to fulfill our mission to feed families.”
The food banks that are included in this program, in turn, support local soup kitchens, food pantries, senior food programs, daycare centers, and other member agencies, a release explained.
For $5, shoppers helped support Sack Hunger at 72 Big Y locations or Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors. With every $5 donation, 10 meals were given to those who need support.
Big Y started the program in 2010, with 740 meals donated that first year. Now, with over 1.5 million meals given, Sack Hunger is continuing to grow.
