More Than $1 Million Worth of Meth Found in Pepper Trailer

NOGALES, AZ – Hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine were discovered hidden in a tractor-trailer haul of peppers by authorities on Feb. 5th.

About 388 pounds of meth were found and confiscated by Customs and Border Protection officials, according to the Associated Press, with an estimated street value of more than $1.1 million.

The illegal contraband was found concealed in both the front wall and rear doors of a trailer hauling bell peppers through the Nogales, Arizona, port of entry from Mexico to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol stated that this was the largest seizure at this particular port, the Associated Press reports.

Official performed a search of the truck and trailer after an X-ray operator detected anomalies. Driver of the truck, 35-year-old Juan Rodolfo Lugo-Urias of Playas De Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico, denied knowing about the meth being stashed in the vehicle.

Lugo-Urias is being charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, but did not have a listed defense attorney who could comment on his behalf in regards to the case.

The report did not state if he is being charged alone or if the case will remain open and under investigation.
