Reports: Albertsons to Potentially Merge With Kroger
BOISE, ID & CINCINNATI, OH - As we continue to keep a close watch on the evolution of the retail sector, recent news has hit the wire regarding a potential merger between Kroger and Albertsons.
According to Bloomberg, the two retailers are currently exploring a deal that would be among the largest United States retail transactions in years, and the largest supermarket deal since Albertsons was bought by Supervalu, CVS Health Corp., and a group of investment firms for $9.8 billion back in 2006.
The source noted that a potential tie-up would give the combined entity increased purchasing power, a broadening shopper-loyalty program, and greater heft in technology investments as online grocery sales increase.
No final decisions on the deal have been made, and talks could still be delayed or falter, however, an agreement could come as soon as this week. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
