Sobeys and Safeway Cut Prices on Thousands of Items in Western Canada

STELLARTON, NS - As of last Friday, 26 Sobeys, Safeways, and IGA locations in western Canada will offer cuts on as many as 15,000 items, including grocery.

Keri Scobie, Communications Manager, Sobeys Western Canada

“What our customers can expect to see Sept. 2 is thousands of lower everyday prices in the store,” Keri Scobie, Communications Manager for Sobeys Western Canada, said, according to news source Regina Leader-Post. “This is a different strategy for us. This isn’t a sale or a promotion; this is a long-term commitment to everyday low prices.”

The number of items seeing lower prices will depend on the size of the store, the retailer said, with anywhere from 4,000 and 15,000 different items being included in the mix, among them several grocery items.

“We’re still going to have weekly flyer promotions and in-store promotions. What will change is that customers are going to know that their regular, favorite brands are at this low price every day in our stores. So when customers come into their location, there will be a message board that will talk about the specific number of price drops in that store,” Scobie said.

While the initial rollout is in thirteen different Safeways, ten Sobeys, and three IGA stores in the Saskatchewan market, Scobie alluded that the strategy could serve as a pilot that will later extend throughout the entire chain.

“We’ve done something similar in Quebec and we’re looking to the rest of country once we gauge customer reaction to what we’re doing in the West,” Scobie said, telling the new source that it has been Sobeys’ mission for a number of years now to help Canadians to eat more affordably, calling this the next phase of that mission.

AndNowUKnow will report further on this latest approach as more details develop.
