MORRO BAY, CA - It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of James J. Shanley, Founder of Shanley Farms, on February 15, 2023.
Shanley was born July 23, 1961, to John F. (Jack) Shanley and Patricia (Brennan) Shanley. He attended the University of Illinois Champaign and graduated in 1983 before starting his business career at the Chicago Board of Trade. After that, he moved on to California-based JD Heiskell and Co, and in the late nineties, he began his second career in agriculture.
After leaving JD Heiskell, he purchased agricultural land in Visalia and Morro Bay, California, where he started what was to become Shanley Farms. Shanley then began growing citrus fruit and avocados, later adding exotic fruit to his portfolio.
During his career, Shanley became one of the largest producers of finger limes in North America, according to a release. He also developed and trademarked the Morro Bay brand of avocados.
In addition to his passion for agriculture, Shanley was a gourmet cook with the goal of educating consumers on flavors and the health benefits of Shanley Ranches’ unique crops. He was also an avid traveler, using his experiences to add to his repertoire of dishes.
With his passing, Shanley’s daughter and business partner, Megan Shanley Warren, and her husband Justin Warren, plan to continue and expand his legacy at Shanley Farms, preparing for the next generation to carry on his vision.
