WASHINGTON, D.C. - The restaurant industry is poised for significant growth in 2025, with sales projected to reach $1.5 trillion and employment expected to hit 15.9 million by year-end. According to the National Restaurant Association’s 2025 State of the Restaurant Industry report, resilient consumer demand, experience-driven dining, and innovation are driving this momentum.

The industry will add over 200,000 net new jobs this year, maintaining its position as the nation’s second-largest private-sector employer, as stated in the press release. Additionally, more than 80 percent of restaurant operators expect their 2025 sales to be higher or on par with 2024, despite increasing competition.

Michelle Korsmo, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Restaurant Association

“The fundamentals of the restaurant industry are strong, and operators are optimistic about the year ahead,” said Michelle Korsmo, President and CEO of the National Restaurant Association. “Industry sales are expected to grow more than four percent this year, and employment should reach nearly 16 million jobs. That growth will come from restaurant operators finding the balance of value and experience for consumers, and innovating breakthrough efficiency in their operations.”

Evolving Consumer Expectations

The report highlights that “value” for consumers now extends beyond price to include experience, hospitality, and welcoming environments. Research shows 70 percent of consumers are interested in tasting events, 52 percent in private chef-led dinners, and 50 percent in cooking classes, reflecting the growing demand for hospitality-driven dining. Loyalty programs are also key, with 70 percent of operators reporting increased traffic from these initiatives.

On-Premises and Off-Premises Dining

Operators are prioritizing in-person dining, with 90 percent of fine dining and 87 percent of casual dining operators identifying increased on-site traffic as critical to success. However, off-premises dining remains essential, particularly for younger demographics. Delivery and takeout continue to thrive, with 82 percent of consumers, including 89 percent of millennials, expressing interest in ordering delivery more often if finances allow.

“Nine out of 10 people enjoy going to restaurants, and restaurant operators understand what it takes to keep that experience positive,” Korsmo added.

Despite challenges like rising labor and food costs, the industry’s resilience and adaptability position it for continued growth. For more insights, click here for the full report supported by Sage.
