SALINAS, CA - For retail or foodservice, poolside or tableside, lettuce is a staple during the summer months due to its crisp, refreshing flavor. As the weather continues to heat up here in the Northern Hemisphere, Braga Fresh Family Farms is ready for the rest of the season heading into fall, and Casey Mills, Director of Commodity Management, is giving us the lowdown.

“We are in our summer plantings now, and as is typical during this timeframe, overall organic demand has backed off with the onset of locally grown programs and farmers markets across the country,” Casey explains. “Currently, as we head into August, promotional opportunities exist for Organic Cauliflower and Organic red and green leaf lettuce.”

As Casey details, two items, Iceberg and Romaine lettuce, are seeing demand exceeding supply. For both varieties, the grower is witnessing strong open market pricing.

When the summer begins to wind down, Braga will start to ramp up volume to meet the increased demand that has historically occurred during the fall season.
