Walmart Reports Strongest Food Comp Sales in 5 Years for Q2 of 2018
BENTONVILLE, AR - Despite the speculations of a new power on the grocery block, Walmart’s second quarter for fiscal 2018 showed some of the best results in food the company has seen in recent years.
“Under Greg Foran’s leadership, the stores continue to perform well. The grocery business has really strengthened as food categories delivered the strongest quarterly comp sales performance in five years,” Doug McMillon, President and CEO, said in an earnings call after the reveal of the report. “We’re also pleased with the expense discipline as physical stores leveraged expenses for the second consecutive quarter. We’ve done this while maintaining high in-stock and service levels.”
Walmart completed remodels of 283 stores globally, and further expanded its online grocery service to include more than 900 locations in the U.S.
“The majority of this growth was organic through walmart.com, including Online Grocery, which is growing quickly,” Brett Biggs, Executive VP and CFO, said on the call. “In Canada, net sales increased 3.4%, and comp sales increased 2.5%. We further improved our price position against competitors, which contributed to market share gains in key traffic driving categories such as food and consumables. Inventory was also a focus, as the team reduced overall levels even as sales increased.”
Biggs added that the company has improved its customer value proposition to include free two-day shipping on millions of items and Easy Reorder, plus a more than 30% increase of its SKUs since the first quarter to over 67 million.
Overall highlights for the quarter included:
- Total revenue of $123.4 billion, an increase of $2.5 billion, or 2.1%. Excluding currency, total revenue was $124.4 billion, an increase of $3.5 billion, or 2.9%
- Walmart U.S. comp sales increased 1.8% with traffic growth of 1.3%, marking the twelfth consecutive quarter with positive comp sales
- For e-commerce growth, net sales and GMV grew 60% and 67%, respectively, as customers continued to respond well to new initiatives and an expanded assortment
- Net sales at Walmart International were $28.3 billion, a decrease of 1.0%; excluding currency, net sales were $29.3 billion, an increase of 2.5%; nine of eleven markets posted positive comp sales
- Second quarter EPS included a charge of $0.17 for loss on extinguishment of debt in connection with the company's recently completed debt tender offers; this discrete charge was partially offset by the gain from the sale of the Suburbia business in Mexico, which benefited EPS by $0.05
“Retail is constantly evolving and it’s critical that we move even faster as the customer and competitive landscape continue to change,” McMillon said. He also thanked his team for delivering another solid quarter, saying that Walmart is moving faster and becoming more creative it strives to make every day easier for busy families.
