Seminis Introduces New SummerSlice™ Watermelon Line
ST. LOUIS, MO - Word on the street is that global seed company Seminis is re-entering the watermelon market with a few new products in tow.
The company announced that it is introducing four new varieties to the watermelon category, which is being discussed at the 2016 National Watermelon Association Conference, taking place February 25-27 in New Orleans, LA.
The new products are all part of Seminis’ SummerSlice™ product line, which the company says are meant to rediscover the simple joys of summer with the juicy, sweet taste of watermelons.
Get to know the varieties below:
Joy Ride
Described by Seminis as a highly adaptable, vigorous plant type, the company expressed confidence in its ability to grow in all U.S. regions. Joy Ride is a hybrid that produces a large percentage of 36-count watermelons, offering a firm fruit and thick rinds.
Road Trip
This particular variety is a 45-count watermelon hybrid that Seminis calls an exceptional internal and external quality. Road Trip has a vigorous vine and uniform shape, adaptable and with a high potential for yield.
Summer Breeze
With a 45–60 count variety, this, too, brings high yield potential. Summer Breeze watermelons are reported as well-suited for shipping even with a thin rind, making it an extremely attractive product for retailers and a tasty addition to the line.
Wingman
This particular variety is an extended flowering pollinizer, according to Seminis, improving the likelihood of necessary pollen during the flowering of triploid watermelons. Wingman is easily distinguishable during harvest, standing apart from others of the category.
A factor emphasized by the company was the line’s ability to give growers access to the newest breeding technologies in time for seed decision for their spring planting.
All four new varieties are currently available for purchase, with even more on the way. Seminis is currently planning another new variety launch for 2017, so keep checking in as we continue to follow this and other key developments in the watermelon category and beyond.
