Alpine Fresh Announces New Berry Variety
DORAL, FL - There’s a new variety kicking down the doors of Blackberry Town with a plan to advance the category in new and exciting ways. Alpine Fresh and Berry Fresh are introducing Sweet Karoline™ blackberries to the market for the first time ever this year, after seven years of research, development, and market testing.
“We believe that once the consumer is able to get this variety in their stores, they will be extremely happy with the quality and taste of the fruit. The blackberry industry has been craving something new to advance the category and this is a big step in that right direction,” said Walter Yager, CEO of Alpine Fresh.
The Sweet Karoline blackberry, according to a press release, was developed by the breeding program and growing operation Expoberries, owned and operated by Alpine Fresh and Berry Fresh. This variety is the first out of this elite program to make its market debut, adding some extra sweetness to the Sweet Karoline launch.
“We’re very excited to introduce Sweet Karoline into our product line,” added Jyoti Bhogal, Vice President of Sales, Berry Fresh. “Its distinct sweet taste is really unlike anything on the market.”
The Sweet Karoline is distinguished for its remarkably sweet taste and its resistance to red cells. In addition, the new variety touts a better shelf-life and significantly higher brix levels than other varieties.
“After years of development, we are extremely proud to reach this new chapter of our breeding program," noted Lorenzo Venezian, President of Berry Fresh. “We anticipate that our customers’ will really love Sweet Karoline.”
Currently being grown in Mexico, with growing trials underway in the U.S. to expand the variety to year-round availability, the Sweet Karoline is currently available nine months of the year (October to June).
