PECKVILLE, PA - OSO Sweet Onions is thrilled to celebrate their very own Herschel Durrence, named 2024 Grower of the Year by the Vidalia Onion Committee! This prestigious recognition, awarded at the annual banquet at the Dahlia Event Center in Vidalia, Georgia, represents the pinnacle of excellence in our industry.

Herschel's journey exemplifies the dedication and passion that makes OSO Sweet Onions truly exceptional. His story is deeply rooted in three generations of farming excellence in Mendes, Georgia, where he continues to farm. This rich agricultural heritage, combined with modern innovation, delivers the sweet, mild flavor that OSO Sweet® onions are famous for.

Herschel began growing onions in 2019 under an exclusive marketing agreement with Michael Cutler, a highly respected figure in the onion industry. In 2022, the two joined forces to acquire a packing facility—formerly owned by Red Sky Ag—located in the Evans County Industrial Park. This led to the creation of MMH Packing LLC, which impressively processed 31 million pounds of onions in 2024.

To support their continued growth, the state-of-the-art facility is undergoing expansions in 2025, adding more cooling and drying rooms to enhance quality and efficiency. This expansion will significantly increase their capacity to pack, cool, and ship onions.

Michael and Herschel have also partnered to grow OSO Sweet Vidalia Onions, and this year, all Herschel’s Vidalia onions will be packed under the legendary OSO Sweet label.
