Frieda's Karen Caplan Urges Retailers to Cash In on Purple Buzz
LOS ALAMITOS, CA – Purple produce is, by all accounts, primed to explode.
Violaceous produce has made the rounds of food trend pieces in the national media, with nods in NBC’s TODAY, Fortune, Forbes, Food & Wine, Parade, and Consumer Reports. With this in mind, Frieda’s Specialty Produce is offering retailers advice on just how to capitalize on purple’s popularity.
“Purple fruits and vegetables are everywhere in the media right now with purple cauliflower and Stokes Purple® sweet potatoes leading the way,” said Karen Caplan, President and CEO of Frieda’s Specialty Produce, in a company release. “Cauliflower in general is gaining ground as a contender to dethrone kale, and Stokes Purple® sweet potatoes sales remain strong as shoppers are asking for them by name nationwide.”
The majority of the aforementioned media reports mention Stokes Purple® sweet potatoes, purple asparagus, and purple cauliflower by name—all of which were predicted by Frieda’s to be top trends for 2017—and all of which are available from the specialty produce provider.
Other on-trend items include passion fruit, purple potatoes, purple carrots, radicchio, Treviso, and eggplant.
Frieda’s has been promoting purple produce since its “Year of Purple” campaign in 2013.
Caplan noted that retailers looking to boost sales with Frieda’s ample purple produce offerings should contact the company’s account managers, and added: “This is the perfect time to build a big, bountiful ‘Purple Power’ destination in the produce department or promote special menus while purple is fresh in shoppers’ minds.”
