CALIFORNIA - Some extreme weather has hit California across major parts of the state, bringing with it a plethora of snow in the mountains and heavy gusts of wind in major cities.

Heavy snow hit Northern California last night, with reports noting that upwards of 12—18 inches of snow could hit the Sierras, as the National Weather Service reported. In Southern California, wind gusts could reach up to 80 mph.

The weather has been so extreme in Northern California that an avalanche occurred at a Tahoe resort. KCRA 3’s coverage noted there was one casualty—we’ve not yet heard any additional news.

Transportation delays may go into effect for anyone trying to cross over the Sierras, and winter storm warnings have gone into effect. This snow should impact current snowpack levels, as the state of California currently sits at 44 percent of normal. The California Snow Report noted that California's annual average snowfall total is 206".
