SPAIN - Authorities in Spain are on high alert as they recently uncovered a suspected European-wide multi-million-dollar drug smuggling operation that was using the guise of fresh produce to transport marijuana.

According to reporting from Sunday World, the plot was foiled when two Irishmen were arrested on the Costa Blanca after a routine traffic accident uncovered nearly four kilos (8.8 lbs) of marijuana in the back of a lorry.

A Bulgarian lorry driver parked nearby the accident had spent the afternoon with the two Irishmen; he was also held after walking up to authorities to learn the details of the accident. Upon searching his vehicle, they discovered nearly 300 kilos (661 lbs) of marijuana and 150 kilos (330 lbs) of cannabis resin hidden amongst lettuce and cabbage headed for Dublin, Ireland.

Spanish authorities uncovered over 350 kilos (771 lbs) of illegal substances valued at just under €840,000 ($955K) hidden underneath lettuce and cabbage on a shipment headed for Dublin, Ireland

Local police in Elche also discovered a warehouse a few feet away that was rented by one of the suspects who was taken into custody.

In total, the alleged marijuana found during the incident totaling 350 kilos (771 lbs) is valued at just under €840,000 ($955K).

Thank you, once again, to the authorities around the globe that continue to put a stop to the misappropriation of fresh produce for these dastardly acts.
